A couple of bad nights are enough to make a person look “less attractive¨ to others. Dark-circled eyes and puffy lids don’t contribute much to our beauty. Strangers perceive people with tired faces as less healthy and approachable.
The researchers asked male and female university students to get a good night’s sleep for a couple of nights in a row.
A week later, they were asked to restrict, for two consecutive nights, their night sleep to only four hours per night.
Each session was photographed.
Then, the researchers asked 122 strangers – women and men, to review the photos and rate them by categories like; attractiveness, health, tiredness and trustworthiness.
Most of strangers found judging if the person they were looking at was tired, easy. They also felt the tired ones did not seem trustworthy, and perceived them to be less healthy too.
In evolutionary terms this makes sense. An unhealthy-look mayt activate disease-avoidance mechanisms in others.
Most people don’t want to hang out with people who may be sick. Yet, someone who looks energetic hold lots of appeal.
But don’t worry, most of us can endure to miss out on a bit of sleep now and again without major consequences to our appearance.
But, this study reminds us how important a good night sleep is and how lack of it affects our life.
